Life-changing Fluoroscopy for Rags

Thanks to the application of a C-Arm Fluoroscope donated by The Rumba Foundation, Wire Hair Fox Terrier, Rags has said goodbye to a life of continuous urinary tract infections.

Ten-year-old Rags, who was referred to Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology and Soft Tissue (FROST) in early 2017.

As a young dog, Rags developed an obstruction in his urethra, caused by stones. Scar tissue from initial surgery resulted in his being unable to pass urine normally, so his family had to drain his bladder using a tube several times a day. And because he couldn’t empty his bladder fully, Rags suffered repeated urinal tract infections and had to be on long-term antibiotics.
Thanks to the C-Arm Fluoroscope donated by The Rumba Foundation to FROST, Rags underwent a contrast fluoroscopy, which showed the stricture in the urethra. Under fluoroscopic guidance, a wire was manipulated across the stricture and a stent was guided over the wire into the correct location spanning the stricture. The fluoroscopy provided a live image of the whole process. Immediately following recovery from anaesthesia Rags was seen to be urinating normally!

He continues to flourish at home and has said goodbye to the tube and to urinary tract infections. The application of fluoroscopy during his treatment made a life-changing difference - for Rags and his family!
