Rumba funds X-ray ‘movies’

Supporting the research and treatment of cancer in animals has always been right at the heart of what we do. So, we’re delighted to announce our donation of £50,000 to buy a C-Arm Fluoroscope, delivered to the Oncology and Soft Tissue centre at Fitzpatrick Referrals animal hospital (FROST).

The C-arm fluoroscope is an X-ray system that facilitates the viewing of moving structures of the body. An image of the part of the body being scanned is transmitted to a TV-type monitor, allowing the clinician to see a real-time X-ray ‘movie’.
Fluoroscopy allows for the treatment of specific organs and supports a variety of examination and procedures, such as positioning a stent into a blocked blood vessel, inserting catheters and placing devices inside the body. It is also used for minimally-invasive fracture repair. The C-Arm Fluoroscope is widely used for medical imaging in humans too.

The Rumba Foundation has been inspired by the pioneering work of the Veterinary Cancer Research Programme at the University of Surrey. Working in partnership with the Fitzpatrick Referrals team, they provide one of the country’s leading veterinary cancer centres. They respond absolutely to our mission to support projects that further the advance of animal patient care.
Professor Nick Bacon, Clinical Director, Oncologic & Soft Tissue Surgery at Fitzpatrick Referrals, said:
“The equipment adds a whole new avenue for therapy in cats and dogs. The Rumba funding not only allows us to do more advanced therapies on animals to save lives, but also makes the treatment very accessible – as we haven’t had to buy the machine ourselves, it makes it significantly cheaper for owners than it would normally be, so this gift has a double benefit.”
The Rumba Foundation’s Trustees are particularly pleased to be able to fund the C-Arm, knowing of the collaborative work being carried out by Fitzpatrick Referrals with oncologists at the Royal Surrey Hospital. This means that human patients will also benefit as innovative approaches are explored and refined by the teams.

One of our Founding Trustees, Fiona Hindle said: “Nick and the team share our passion to make a genuine difference to pets and their families and we believe that investing in the world-renowned veterinary clinicians at Fitzpatrick Referrals and the new Surrey Vet School could lead to breakthroughs in cancer treatment and, ultimately, cure. The Rumba Foundation is a legacy to an animal that changed our lives forever, as well as all companion animals which deserve the very best of clinical care.”

“If this story has inspired you to make a contribution to help fund our next life-enhancing purchase, you can donate here. Your gift will be enormously appreciated.”
